What a CVD coating is

CVD coatings are deposited at high temperature as thick multilayer films, typically TiN/TiCN over an Al2O3 layer. The thick layer stack gives the wear resistance that steel and cast iron turning needs at high cutting speed. Reach for CVD when the cut is continuous or lightly interrupted, the material is steel or cast iron, and the priority is crater and flank wear resistance at speed. Thick CVD films are less suited to sharp-edged, positive geometries and to built-up-edge-prone stainless work.
